Advantages of lining

- Reduction in seepage losses: The seepage losses are substantially reduced by providing lining. Thus water saved can be used to irrigate more area in the command.
- Reduction in water logging: Seepage through the unlined canal is the main source of waterlogging. This is minimized by providing lining of canals.
- Higher velocities can be permitted: The lining offers higher velocity of flowing water in the canal. Due to a smooth surface, the roughness is reduced.
- Steeper bed slope can be provided: The canal bed slope can be made steeper which increased the velocity of the flowing water and reduces evaporation losses, the water reaches the land quickly.
- Reduction in maintenance cost: The lined canal will have less annual maintenance since the growth of weeds, silt etc. can be minimized.
