Advantages and disadvantages of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT)

There are some advantages of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) are,

• The insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) is easy to turn ON and OFF.
• The switching frequency is higher than that of power BJT.
• It has a low on state power dissipation.
• It has simpler driver circuit.

There are some disadvantages of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) are,

• The switching frequency of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) is not as high as that of a power MOSFET.
• It cannot block high reverse voltages.
