What is meant by DSP (digital signal processor)?
The DSP stands for digital signal processor. The digital signal processor is a microprocessor exclusively designs to handle digital signal processing tasks. Digital signal processing algorithms typically require a large number of mathematical operations to be performed quickly and repeatedly on a series of data samples. Digital signal processors take a digital signal and process it to improve the signal into clearer sound, faster data or sharper images. Most general purpose microprocessors and operating systems can execute DSP algorithms successfully, but are not suitable for use in portable devices such as mobile phones and PDAs because of power efficiency limits. A DSP can process data in real time, making it ideal for applications that can’t tolerate delays. The DSP used a special memory architecture that is able to fetch multiple data or instruction at the same time. It can be found in almost any field, whether medical image processing, sound reproduction, radar and sonar, oil processing, or telecommunications basically any application in which signals are being compressed and reproduced.
