Series motor
It develops very high starting torque and it has adjustable firing speed. It is suitable for any value of load which needs high starting torque.
This motor is widely used in :
- Electric trains
- Cranes
- Hoists
- Conveyers
- Diesel-electric locomotives
- Trolley cars and trolley buses.
- Rapid transits system
Shunt motor
It is constant speed motor having to start torque 30 to 40 %. More than its rated torque. Also, the speed of the motor can be adjusted over a wide range.
This motor is widely used in :
- Lathe machine
- Drilling machine
- Milling machine
- Centrifugal and reciprocating pumps
- Blowers and fans
- Printing machine
- Paper machine etc.
However induction motor has similar characteristics so it can also be used in above application.
Cumulative compound motor
It has starting torque. It can be operated even at no load as it runs moderately high speed at no load.
This motor is widely used in
- Elevators
- Rolling Mills
- Punches
- Shears
- Planers
Differential compound motor
The speed of motor increase in load, which leads to the unstable operation so this motor is not used for practical applications.
